The Approach is one of the three intended documentaries about the French rural areas. In this part of the trilogy, French peasants maintaining their farming in an old-fashioned, traditional style are depicted. Many of them would be likely to accept new technologies, but they cannot absent themselves from the usual order. In the beginning of the film, the camera is not allowed ‘to see’ more than a kitchen, where the peasants are sitting. Speaking in their dialect they do not reveal private secrets, and only step by step during the film the spectator gets to know more and more. In the director’s opinion, the shy, however intelligent peasants represent the essence of the French culture. Raymond Depardon (France, 1942) Born in Burgundy to a family of peasants, he has worked as a photographer, journalist and director. He is known in France and elsewhere in the world for his compassionate and friendly attitude and respect for other people’s lives in his works. Started to work in filming after having created a separate cinema department in the photo agency he had established.
